GONE FISHING
Lee recently brought me to this place called 'Gone Fishing' - A small neighborhood cafe tucked away in the heart of Hillview residential enclave in the western part of Singapore. Finally there is something to rave about in the west side! Haha...
This cafe was first established in October 2002 as a casual space for the unhurried soul by Kenny and Mei Chin, a husband-and-wife team who have left the corporate world to pursue a family-centred lifestyle. It has since evolved into a field of dreams on which many have lived their dreams as well as a haven for the kindred souls to exchange ideas and learn more about life.
Frankly speaking, i think not many people know about the existence of this place as it was literally hidden from the main road with not much traffic, other than the residents living there and the regulars who know about this place. Reminiscient of coffee outlets Starbucks and Coffee Bean, there is a laid-back sense of intimacy with acoustic piped music and amber lighting. It was actually a blessing in disguise that the cafe was not located in a more central location, as it will be almost impossible to create such an unique, cosy and quiet ambience there.
The moment we stepped inside the cafe, the first sight that greeted us was the shocking amount of graffiti on the walls. In fact, it filled up almost every visible corners of the walls. Interestingly, it is the cafe's policy that customers are allowed to scrawl whatever they want on the walls as a form of free expression.
Actually, it was a rather good idea in the sense that it gives you something to ponder about while you read and reflects on the thoughts of others. I should have taken a look inside the washroom because Lee told me there are a lot of humorous and creative scribblings such as: "If you cannot aim properly while standing, please try sitting" "Caution: For experts only. Try to pee and shit at the same time" Another interesting concept - The tables there were converted from sewing machines! Those very old and traditional type which my mum also owns one. I think it can be consider an antique. Haha... The foot pedal as shown in the picture is still working perfectly. Good exercise for the leg :) The cafe offers a wide selection of food and beverage items, including premium boutique Australian wine, Italy’s favourite coffee (Lavazza), imported beers, fine selection of cakes, and home-style cuisines. Their signature main courses are the Suzanne’s Roast Chicken and the Prata Wrap. As for the signature drink, it has to be the almond coffee, with the coffee beans proudly display on the shelves and bar counter for customers who want to make their own almond coffee at home. The Bar Counter
The prices of the food there is quite reasonable. For example, a personal pizza is around $8.50. A set meal with soup, main course and drink will cost 15 bucks. Since i was already there, how could i miss out the signature items right?
So i ordered these: The soup of the day was mushroom soup. It was rather smooth and creamy, especially when served hot. To me, food just taste extra delicious when they are served piping hot, even better when i can see the steam rising from it. To me, the same food just taste different when they have turned cold. I know i may be weird but well, that is my personal preference. The almond coffee! Frankly speaking, i have a love-hate realationship with almond. On one hand, i like almonds when they are in nut form, like those that comes together with chocolates or biscuits. Ironically, i hate the taste of almond when they are prepared as those beancurd type, usually added with a mixture of oriental fruits such as canned lychees or longans. The almond essence is just too strong for my liking when they are served that way. In the case of this almond coffee, the aroma and taste is kind of similar to the almond bean curd, but with the added fragrance of the coffee. Actually it was not that bad after all. Surprising, I managed to finish up the coffee. Those who likes almond beancurds will definately loves this almond coffee.
The suzanne’s roast chicken. I think i waited more than 30 minutes for them to prepare this dish, which was a long wait considering my stomach was already growling by then. The roast chicken is marinated with a secret recipe and comes with chicken rice and chilli sauce. The chicken rice was not too oily while the chicken was soft and tender. Not much fats was visible on the chicken skin plus salads were provided. Definately a no guilt dish for the health conscious. To me, the most tasty part is definately the skin. Haha... As for the chilli sauce, it was hot and spicy. My lips and tongue ended up with a nice tingling sensation all over afterward. There is only one word to describe it: "Shiok!"
Lee decided to take the pork ribs as the roast chicken was taking a long time to prepare. I should have tried one piece because Lee said the pork ribs were absolutely delicious. Well... maybe i will try it next time :)
To provide extra value for customers, the cafe also provides a comfortable sofa seats for talks and discussions and a reading corner for people to sit down, relax and enjoy a nice cup of coffee. In addition, they also provide free board games, though not as much varieties as those that you find in the Settlers Cafe (a board game cafe that charges by hours). Since they are free, nobody is complaining. You are allowed to bring your own games too if you find the games there too boring :)
The Board Games We decided to play this game which is similar to Scrabble. Group up into 3 pairs together with Lee's friends. Ended up we only had time for this game, which really killed a lot of our brain cells. Haha... My team won in the end. Yeah~
The final verdict is that if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place to pass the time, this is the place to come. It is not only a good place to hold a business discussion, but also a good place to hang out with friends or even for couples who want more privacy. For those interested to go there, the address is: Gone Fishing 15 Chu Lin Road Singapore 669907 Tel 6762-9901 Fax 6762-7336 Operating hours: Open 5 days a week (Wed-Sun), closed on Mon-Tue (except for talks/special events).
